Tips for Southbank

Toilets along the Southbank Promenade

Southbank is built for walking, and the good news is that the Southbank Promenade — the riverside stretch between Princes Bridge and the Crown complex — has public facilities spaced along it, so a day by the water rarely leaves you stuck. The Arts Centre Melbourne and the NGV International on St Kilda Road both have visitor toilets during opening hours, and the Crown entertainment complex has extensive, well-maintained facilities open late into the night.

A short walk away, the gardens offer more options: Alexandra Gardens and the Queen Victoria Gardens have toilet blocks near their main paths, and the Royal Botanic Gardens a little further along have several. Toward the west, South Wharf and the DFO centre are dependable indoor stops with baby-change facilities.

Events and busy nights

Southbank is one of Melbourne's busiest precincts after dark, thanks to the restaurants, the casino and the arts venues. On show nights and during riverside festivals the promenade fills quickly, and the nearest facilities can get busy — the 🕐 Open Now filter helps you spot which blocks are still open late. Garden toilets, by contrast, typically close around dusk, so in the evening lean toward the promenade, the arts venues and Crown.

Families and accessibility

The indoor venues — the NGV, Crown, South Wharf and DFO — are the most family-friendly, with baby-change tables and step-free access. Along the promenade, accessible cubicles are available but vary in size and layout, so if you have specific needs it's worth checking the ♿ Accessible filter and, for unfamiliar spots, planning around the larger indoor facilities.
